 '1861 Census' - Missing pieces of the 1861 census
There are a number of enumeration books missing, or parts of enumeration books (usually missing start or finish), from the 1861 census. This site gives a list of the books affected that we know of, both those missing in their entirety (M) and those which are incomplete (I) in the National Archives.

 Cheshire Parish Register Project
The aim of the project is to make available, in a reasonable period of time, all the information in each of the parish registers of the ancient county of Cheshire.  IGI Batch Numbers - British Isles and North America
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as the LDS) has made the International Genealogical Index (the "IGI") available on the internet at http://www.familysearch.org and provided a very effective searching capability. However, it is not always easy to locate your ancestors (even if they are there in the IGI) using the search mechanisms provided at that site. This is because a search by last name only is not permitted unless you search within a single batch of records at a time or, at minimum, across the entire country (not even a single county let alone a town). If you have a rare name this might be OK but what if you are looking for Smith or Jones?

Those for 1861 1871 1881 and 1891 were completely destroyed earlier, by order of the government.

 The Parish Register Transcription Society
The Society are pleased to announce that the long awaited parish register transcript for Westbourne, Sussex, is now available. We would like to extend our thanks to the Westbourne Local History Group, for carrying out the checking of the transcript against the original registers. Nearing completion, we have the Sussex parishes of Slindon and Petworth, which should be available by early spring.  Transcribing English parish registers
A database is the ideal way to store information such as a parish register. It can be sorted and searched in seconds (or less), even with a file containing hundreds of thousands of records. We can still print out a meaningful “transcription” onto paper, and the database can also be used to create an instant index for the paper print, although in use in the computer, indexes are no longer needed, as the information can be searched for and found incredibly quickly. But we need to consider the way that the data is entered in the first place, and hence the point of this article.

 Ellis Island Gateway To America
Opened on January 1, 1892, Ellis Island became the nation's premier federal immigration station. In operation until 1954, the station processed over 12 million immigrant steamship passengers.  Index of Victorian, Edwardian and 20th Century UK Photographs
Many years ago Rosemary and Stan Rodliffe began their search for Edwin Mowll who probably took photographs of their Norfolk ancestors on a summer outing to Holkham in 1883. They traced Edwin's birth at Dover in 1851, his move to Lynn where he had a studio around 1885 and then to Birmingham. They have yet to find their ancestors in his photographs but they became interested in the migration of photographers and dating of photographs and so this site was born.

 MJF's web pages - War Memorial Name Transcripts
The national inventory of war memorials are cataloguing the (estimated) 54,000 UK war memorials: they have around 45,000 catalogued so far, but searchable name listings are unlikely to be on-line for some time. Until then, here are listings of a tiny fraction of that total. I hope these pages can supplement the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's on-line Debt of Honour Register: these pages list men by the parish they came from, and include Rolls of Honour, which often list all those who served, rather than just those that died. Also included are memorials on family gravestones, which are not always in the CWGC database, and older memorials from e.g. the Crimean war, the Boer War, graves of old soldiers or civilian war casualties, and some lists of those serving that I found in local newspapers.

Warwickshire Registration Service is working with volunteers to allow free internet web access to birth, death and marriages index data. This data will allow registration staff to identify much more easily and quickly, the original record in the registers in which births, deaths and marriages were entered at the time of registration right back to 1st July 1837.

 Constables Census Westmorland 1787
Towards the end of 1787 it was decreed that every house in Westmorland should be surveyed for census by the local constable. Some of these records survive, some do not. The standard of reporting varies greatly. West Ward is the most comprehensively covered, Followed by East Ward. Kendal Ward has few surviving returns and Lonsdale Ward has none. The actual returns were taken during December 1787.
